The Beginning

Merit Computers cc was established in Pretoria in 1987 to bring the power of the then, brand new “Personal Computer” to the public at large. Our focus has always been on needs assessment, correct implementation of well selected applications and education and training of end-users. This is always supported by our well known superb, individualised customer service and support.

The Growth

The founder member, Anton Cloete has been in IT since 1985. Starting as a programmer on mainframe computers, using COBOL, developing human resource and financial systems for large corporates and government departments, he soon recognised the incredible power of the small, but under-utilised PC. His focus shifted to addressing the needs of the smaller businesses, enhancing their profitability by implementing time- and money-saving computer-based solutions to streamline the back-office, thus maximising profits.

As technology advanced, Anton kept abreast of the latest developments, and in the early nineties started designing and developing web sites as well. After careful analysis of various marketing trends, and their efficiency in the South-African market, Anton has been able to significantly enhance client’s web-based profits through improved search engine rankings.

The Maturing

Merit Computers is an authorised agent for the “Kwikwap” web development system, which enables the end-user to design, develop and maintain their own web site, at a fraction of the cost of the traditional web development technologies available. This locally developed web site development package (or CMS – “Content Management System”) is extremely affordable, yet loaded with features that many web-masters and web developers charge an arm and a leg for.

The Training

Because knowledge is integral to making right decisions and getting the most benefits from technology, Anton has written and presented many courses, lectures and workshops, and has successfully trained and qualified thousands of people in and out of the IT industry. He also facilitates training workshops in conjunction with the Kwikwap head-office in Pretoria.
